Stand!

Stand! Review

2008 digitally remastered and expanded edition of the Funk band's 1969 opus featuring five bonus tracks. Stand! is the pinnacle of Sly & the Family Stone's early work, a record that represents a culmination of the group's musical vision and accomplishment. Music journalists have often hinted at this record's boundless enthusiasm and blurred stylistic boundaries, yet everything simply gels here, resulting in no separation between the astounding Funk, effervescent irresistible melodies, psychedelicized guitars, and deep rhythms. Add to this a sharpened sense of Pop songcraft, elastic band interplay, and a flowering of Sly's social conscious, and the result is utterly stunning. 13 tracks including 'I Want To Take You Higher', 'Sing A Simple Song' and 'Everyday People'. Stand! Specifications

Need proof of how great Sly and The Family Stone were? Just check out the track listing for Stand! The title track, "I Want to Take You Higher". "You Can Make it if You Try", "Everyday People",(before it was a car commercial)--and this isn't even the greatest hits package! Hippies with attitude (and serious soul moves), Stone and crew were one of the most influential and free-wheeling forces in R&B/rock. Stand shows why. Gut bucket bass lines (thank you Larry Graham), joyous take-you-there anthems, and seething racial politics that made you move--and think--while on the dance floor. --Amy Linden

Stand Back Here Comes

Stand Back Here Comes Review

Here was a harpist every bit as authentic, as emotional, in some ways as adventuresome, as Paul Butterfield. Similarly leading a Chicago band with a veteran Black rhythm section (Fred Below on drums, Bob Anderson on bass) and rock-influenced soloists (keyboardist Barry Goldberg, guitarist Harvey Mandel), Musselwhite played with a depth that belied his age - only 22 when this was cut! His gruff vocals were considerably more affected than they would become later (clearer, more relaxed), but his renditions of "Help Me," "Early in the Morning," and his own "Strange Land" stand the test of time. 180 gram vinyl.
